چکیده

Introduction: Let A be a central simple algebra over a field k of characteristic different from 2. The quadratic form x ∈ A 7→ TrdA(x ) ∈ k is called the trace form of A, and is denoted by TA. This trace form has been studied by many authors (cf.[L], [LM], [Ti] et [Se], Annexe §5 for example). In particular, these classical invariants are well-known (loc.cit.). In [B], we have determined a diagonalization of the trace form of cyclic algebras over fields such that the cube of the fundamental ideal is trivial. In particular, this gives all trace forms of central simple algebras over local fields and non formally real global fields, since any algebra over such a field is cyclic. In this article, we give a characterization of the trace form of a central simple algebra over a local field or a global field in terms of determinant and signatures. We also show that a quadratic form over a global field is isomorphic to a trace form if and only if it is true locally. Then we give a necessary and sufficient condition on trace forms to be isomorphic. Finally, we apply these results to describe explicitly the elements of Br2(k) which can be written n 2 [A], where A is a

Decomposable Quadratic Forms and Involutions

In his book on compositions of quadratic forms, Shapiro asks whether a quadratic form decomposes as a tensor product of quadratic forms when its adjoint involution decomposes as a tensor product of involutions on central simple algebras. We give a positive answer for quadratic forms defined over local or global fields and produce counterexamples over fields of rational fractions in two variable...

On the Second Stiefel-whitney Class of Scaled Trace Forms of Central Simple Algebras

In this paper we compute the second Stiefel-Whitney class of the quadratic form trA/k(ax ), where A is a central simple algebra over a perfect field k of characteristic different from two, a ∈ A is a fixed element, and trA/k is the reduced trace. We show that this class is related on the one hand to the class of A in the Brauer group, and on the other hand to corestrictions of quaternion algebr...

Scaled trace forms of central simple algebras

Any central simple algebra over a field of characteristic not two has a well-defined non-singular quadratic form called the trace form attached to it. This quadratic form was studied in [6] from the viewpoint of the algebraic theory of quadratic forms. In this article we examine a generalization of trace forms to “scaled trace forms” which are defined via the reduced trace map together with sca...

A Local-global Principle for Algebras with Involution and Hermitian Forms

Weakly hyperbolic involutions are introduced and a proof is given of the following local-global principle: a central simple algebra with involution of any kind is weakly hyperbolic if and only if its signature is zero for all orderings of the ground field. Also, the order of a weakly hyperbolic algebra with involution is a power of two, this being a direct consequence of a result of Scharlau. A...
